Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC)

At SMa Institute, our Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC) is responsible for three main roles. These are

The TLC organises a number of value added workshops and seminars for students in SMa Institute. The goal is to ensure a holistic developmental experience for students supplementing their quest for knowledge in their academic studies. Some of these workshops are listed below.

  1. Academic Writing
  2. Creative & Critical Thinking
  3. Emotional Quotient for Career Advancement

Academic Staff Learning and Development Workshops

We recognised the importance and relevance of a Learning Organisation in SMa Institute and how staff must continue to upgrade themselves through self-development workshops. The journey to attain effective pedagogic skills in teaching required discovery on the part of the academic staff. This is achieved through applying various learning techniques and models for example, on Kolb's theory of experiential learning (Hector-Taylor, 1994). Some of these workshops available for academic staff are listed below.

  1. Assessment Methods
  2. Adult Learning
  3. Activity-Based Learning
  4. Classroom Management
  5. Counselling Young Adults
  6. Facilitating Learning
  7. Setting Examination Paper & Marking Scheme
  8. Problem-Based Learning

Academic Standards and Quality

Our aim is to promote teaching as a professional activity and enhance the quality of learning and teaching. We do this through a range of activities, including organising compulsory workshops for new and experienced lecturers, certificate course in learning and teaching in higher education, recommend external events such as conferences and seminars for academic staff development, and the development of (online) educational resources to support learning and teaching.

On top of the above aim, TLC also collaborates with the respective Schools in SMa Institute to identify students who are in need of academic assistance. This collaboration leads to organising supplementary lessons within the Schools for students at risk.

If you need more information about TLC or have any queries on how TLC can assist you, please write to us at tlc@sma.edu.sg
