Singapore Media Academy (SMA) and SMa School of Management (SMa-SOM) will collaborate to offer Mass Communication diploma
Singapore, 28 February 2007 - Singapore Media Academy (SMA) and SMa School of Management (SMa-SOM) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pave the way for a joint collaboration to offer Mass Communication diploma.
The first of its kind in Singapore, it offers students unparalleled access to media training facilities and training programmes, while studying for an accredited diploma that leads to one of Australia's highly regarded mass communication degrees - Murdoch University Bachelor of Mass Communication.
Students will undergo rigorous training for two subjects, comprising of 60 contact hours of training at SMA, a Mediacorp wholly-owned subsidiary, located at Caldecott Broadcast Centre. Areas to be covered include TV presentation and production, radio broadcasting and presentation, as well as print news production and reporting. Assessments will be conducted by SMA Professionals based on performance critiques and the marking of assignment work. The training conducted at SMA forms part of the diploma curriculum, which articulates towards the Murdoch degree.
The 9-month mass communication diploma will kick-starts in April this year and students can expect to graduate by year-end. Those taking the Murdoch mass communication degree are also entitled to study one of SMA's subjects as part of their professional development at no extra fee.
Says SMa-SOM's CEO, James Wong, "We found that there has been a growing demand for practical, hands-on programmes of this nature for some time, especially among young adults. Indeed, we believe that to have a quality communication and media programme, it is imperative that our students get exposure in the media industry. This curriculum enhances the marketability of our graduates and the reputation of our school as a leader in quality education."
Madam Chua Foo Yong, managing director of SMA says, "With the rapid growth of technology and the media industry, there is a critical need for us to nurture more young talents and prepare them for our industry. Through our practice-based training sessions at SMA, we hope to provide them with the necessary knowledge and to equip them with the right skills to work in the media industry once they graduate."
